Madrid (Spain), June 18 (LaPresse) – Trade union leaders and workers from Spain, Italy and across Europe are gathering today in Madrid, at the Palacio de Vista Alegre, to demand quality jobs and an end to EU policies of deregulation and austerity, as the European Council begins in Brussels. The mobilisation, organised by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and the Spanish unions CCOO and UGT, involves over 11,000 people. The CGIL is also present with its general secretary Maurizio Landini and a delegation of 100 people. “We want to send a clear message to the European Commission: workers, pensioners, we are tired of paying for all the crises alone while others continue to speculate and enrich themselves at our expense,” said Landini. European unions denounce that across the EU people are working harder than ever but struggling to make ends meet: too many face insecurity, low wages and an uncertain future, and inequality continues to rise. At the same time, they say, deregulation initiatives from EU institutions are weakening protections and putting workers at greater risk. They specifically cite the EU’s proposed 28th regime, which they describe as “harmful.”
