Vatican City (Vatican), 18 June (LaPresse) – The Italian Church owes “a great deal” to Cardinal Camillo Ruini, “a wise and caring shepherd of Christ’s flock”. Pope Leo XIV said this in his homily at the cardinal’s funeral in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The Pope recalled Ruini’s service as president of the CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference) and as Vicar of the Diocese of Rome: “He was able to guide the People of God and his brother bishops at important and delicate moments, tackling numerous challenges with enthusiasm, discernment and courage,” the Pope continued. “We owe to him insights and initiatives that have left a profound mark on the journey of both the ecclesial and civil communities. We think of the ‘Cultural Project’; of the great effort he put into promoting the Catholic world’s contribution across the most diverse spheres of Italian religious, civil and political life; of the significant work of the Diocesan Synod and its implementation here in Rome; and of his active and engaging presence at various levels of the life of the Church, as well as in the secular world and society.”
