Naples, 15 July (LaPresse) – “It’s over; I’m spending my last few minutes with my family before turning myself in to prison.” So said Mario Roggero, the jeweller from Grinzane Cavour who, on 28 April 2021, killed two robbers and injured a third following a raid on his shop, in a video posted on TikTok. Today, the Court of Cassation rejected the defence’s appeal, upholding the ruling of the Turin Court of Assizes of Appeal. “I have taken note that the judges in Rome have chosen to sentence me to 14 years and 9 months’ imprisonment, as in previous rulings; in effect, they have chosen to give me a life sentence,” says Roggero. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has stood by me – all of you – both in practical and emotional terms. Now I must pass the baton on to you to push for legislation that truly combats injustice and the ever-increasing spread of crime. A big hug to you all; you will be my voice,” he concludes.
