Milan, Nov. 1 (LaPresse) – “Through her life and example, Tina Anselmi embodied the profound values of the emancipation of women that characterized the history of the Republic, leaving a deep mark on the history of democratic Italy”. This was stated by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the tenth anniversary of Tina Anselmi’s death. “At just 17, she chose to fight for freedom, becoming a partisan courier during the struggle against Nazi-Fascism. She took part in the country’s rebirth of freedom, joining the textile workers’ union and later the primary school teachers’ union. Drawing on her experience with the Women’s Youth Movement of Catholic Action, she chose to become politically active in the Christian Democracy party, where she soon became a leader of its Women’s Movement, focusing above all on issues concerning employment, equal rights for women, the family and social welfare”, Mattarella recalled. “Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1968, she became the first woman to be appointed minister in Italian history. As Minister of Labour, she supported legislation on equal pay and equal treatment in the workplace and played a leading role in the passage of a law to promote youth employment. As Minister of Health, she oversaw the establishment of the National Health Service, one of the country’s most precious assets and the fulfilment of constitutional values. Her commitment within the party was closely linked to that of Aldo Moro. Following the assassination of the Christian Democrat statesman, she continued to bear witness to an unwavering commitment to institutional transparency and the rule of law. Her chairmanship of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the P2 Masonic lodge made her a symbol of the fight against covert power structures and their corrupting interference, which had sought to undermine Italian democracy”, Mattarella concluded. “Ten years after her death, the Republic remembers her life and work with gratitude”.
