Mexico City (Mexico), 6 July (LaPresse) – A brace from Jude Bellingham and a goal from the ever-reliable Harry Kane have secured England a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, despite the hosts Mexico pushing right to the very end in a bid to snatch a miraculous draw. The Three Lions have therefore progressed from the legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City and will now face Haaland’s Norway – fresh from their victory over Brazil – for a place in the semi-finals. Bellingham put England ahead in the 36th minute and then doubled their lead two minutes later. In the 42nd minute, Julián Quiñones pulled one back for the hosts, whilst in the 54th minute, Jarell Quansah reduced Thomas Tuchel’s side to 10 men for a nasty foul on Jesús Gallardo. But England did not give up and extended their lead in the 60th minute through Kane, who converted the penalty won after a challenge by Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. For ‘Hurricane’, this was his sixth goal in this World Cup and the 14th of his career in World Cup tournaments. These figures see him draw level with Gerd Müller in fifth place on the all-time World Cup goalscorers’ list. They also put him in contention with Messi, Haaland and Mbappé – who have seven goals each so far – for the title of top scorer in the current tournament. Kane himself later won the penalty that Raúl Jiménez converted, sealing the 3–2 result.
