Tehran (Iran), 6 July (LaPresse) – The funeral procession in honour of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed on 28 February in a raid carried out by Israel and the United States as part of a military operation against the Islamic Republic, has set off from Tehran. Khamenei’s coffin and those of his family members – who died in the same attack – have been loaded onto a lorry whose sides have been decorated to resemble the ornamental grilles surrounding an imam’s shrine. The coffins will be transported through the streets of Tehran to Mehrabad International Airport, as part of a journey expected to last 12 hours, according to Revolutionary Guards General Hasan Hasanzsdeh, who is overseeing the procession. The Iranian regime anticipates a large turnout at the ceremony across the city, to demonstrate popular support for the government. Thousands of people have already gathered in Tehran’s squares, waving flags and banners in honour of Khamenei. The authorities have closed roads and airspace for the period of mourning, which began on Saturday and is set to last until Thursday, when Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, his hometown.
