Turin, 27 August (LaPresse) – Ratko Mladic, the former military commander of the Bosnian Serbs during the Bosnian War, has died. This was reported by the Serbian public broadcaster RTS. The man, convicted of war crimes and nicknamed the ‘Butcher of Srebrenica’ for his role in the 1995 massacre, was 84 years old and was being held in The Hague. He had suffered several strokes. Accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, Mladic was extradited to The Hague in 2011 after 16 years on the run and stood trial at the detention centre housing those accused by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The trial concluded in 2017 with a life sentence.
