Rome, 11 July (LaPresse) – “It has always been my aim; I’ve always believed that Maldini could be the right person to oversee the FIGC’s technical department, which also encompasses the youth national teams. I began discussions, and within two weeks we had developed ideas and projects, getting down to the nitty-gritty. Paolo told me straight away that he would not only be happy but that it would be the right thing to involve Leonardo as a consultant and adviser in this project, because the work is extensive, demanding and challenging. I’m pleased about this; I have the utmost respect for Leonardo – they are two sides of the same coin. This is a four-year commitment that must take us to the next World Cup in 2030, via a European Championship.” So said FIGC President Giovanni Malagò to Tg2 Post, after announcing the new head coach, Paolo Maldini. “I’m pleased; it was the objective we’d set ourselves, and from now on we’ll start discussing how to jointly agree on the choice of the new head coach. As I’ve always emphasised, I haven’t spoken to anyone. We need a manager, and I believe it is right and also respectful that this decision be made jointly; otherwise, culturally speaking, it would amount to an abuse of power on the part of the president. There is also a different cultural aspect to this; it was my idea to seek input, even though I know that the ultimate responsibility lies with me and my colleagues on the Federal Council,” he concluded.
