Washington (US), 2 July (LaPresse) – The United States feared that Israel was planning to kill key Iranian negotiators, right in the midst of the delicate talks held over recent months to reach an interim peace agreement. This is according to the New York Times, citing current and former US administration officials. Although the elimination of senior Iranian officials had been part of Israel’s strategy since the start of the conflict, American concerns regarding the possible targeting of two specific officials from Tehran — Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister, and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Parliament — intensified during the delicate ceasefire negotiations that began in April. As reported by the NYT, fearing that an assassination attempt by Israel could derail the negotiations, the United States went so far as to ask other countries in the region to warn Iran of the possibility that Israel might target the two officials.
