Frankfurt (Germany), 7 July (LaPresse) – Ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has defended Germany’s defence spending against criticism from US President Donald Trump. “Let’s look at the figures, and they show an upward trend,” Wadephul told Deutschlandfunk radio, noting that Germany will meet the target of spending 3.5 per cent of gross domestic product on defence by the end of the decade. “We outspend many of our partners,” Wadephul said, adding that “even in Washington, people are taking note of what Germany is doing”. Ahead of the two-day NATO summit in Ankara, Trump had once again criticised the level of defence spending by major European partners such as Germany, France and Britain. Trump also described Germany’s contribution to NATO as “ridiculous”.
